Sorry! But it has been such a busy couple of months. That we haven't had time to dig out any rousing tales for this Issue. So as an end piece We have dug out some unusual pieces of historical myths and beliefs. See what you think. Are they:

Fact or Fiction?

  • In Scandinavian countries, girls used to try their very best to be married on a Friday, Freya's day. Freya (Freyja), often depicted being drawn in a chariot by two cats, is the cat-goddess of the Nordic people. If a young woman married on a sunny Friday then it was known that she had taken good care of the family cats and that Freya would bless the union.

  • According to Jewish tradition, God had no hand in the making of cats. The first female and male couple were snorted from the nostrils of a lion as it was boarding Noah's Ark.

  • The cat was held sacred in ancient India. Sanskrit writings make numerous references to the influence of the cat upon humankind.

  • Throughout the centuries shamans, sages and wise ones have been convinced of the mystical powers of the cat, and they have openly consulted their feline familiars. In Great Britain, especially in the rural areas of Wales, Scotland and Southwest England, children were told to spend tine petting cats, because it was sincerely believed that some of the cat's psychic abilities would rub off on them.

  • In Britain in the 1940's Black Cats were considered lucky, and were often given as good luck charms to brides, actresses, tennis players and pilots. It was considered bad luck to refuse the gift.

  • Until a few short years ago it was still believed that if a Pedigree Queen got out and was 'caught' by a Moggie Tom, the Queens breeding days were over as she was ruined. Also if the Queen was mated at the end of her season the litter would be predominantly male.

  • Cats know what the weather will be beforehand.
If a cat washes behind its ears there will be heavy rain.
If a cat runs around in a demented fashion there will be strong winds.
Cats were believed to control the weather in medieval times and were associated with witches and the Devil.

  • Several time in the last 100 years winged cats have been reported, they were said to have been seen flying low over the ground, running fast with the aid of their 'wings,' or leaping up incredibly high walls or trees (that run and climb quick trick we do). All the cats reported have been longhaired cats, but none have shown up recently. (In my opinion their grooming left a lot to be desired and the wings were just matted fur. Silk)
